Extended data
So far, the earliest higher primate found on the map of China, Australopithecus China, lived in southern China 45 million years ago. Archaeological evidence shows that Homo erectus lived in China between 2.24 million and 2.25 million years ago. At present, there are Wushan people, Yuanmou people, Lantian people, Nanjing Homo erectus and Beijing Zhoukoudian Homo erectus. These are the earliest known traces of primitive humans.
The prehistoric culture in China has gone through the following stages: the early and middle paleolithic period (about 500,000 to 400,000 years ago) dominated by Homo erectus, and then the middle and late paleolithic period (about 200,000 to 654.38 million years ago) represented by cavemen.
The representative culture in the early Neolithic period was Peiligang culture, which belonged to matriarchal clan society, and there was no obvious stratification in society. Secondly, the middle Neolithic period represented by Yangshao culture, during which the social nature changed from matriarchal clan society to paternal clan society, the polarization between the rich and the poor deepened gradually, and the productivity level improved significantly.
The late Neolithic period, represented by Longshan culture, appeared about 4000 years ago. At present, archaeological work has found several sites belonging to this period, such as Zhongyuan site group, Jianghan site group and Haidai site group, in the Yangtze River and Yellow River basins. This may indicate that great changes have taken place in the organizational form of society during the Longshan period.
