Dengfeng has a rich history and splendid culture. China's first dynasty, the Xia Dynasty, made Yangcheng its capital, which was successful today. Dengfeng and Chenggong were named after Wu Zetian's "Mount Songshan" and "Mount Yuefeng" in 696 AD. The imperial edict changed Songyang County to Dengfeng County and Yangcheng County to Chenggong County. The Jin Dynasty merged the two counties into Dengfeng County.
1994 Dengfeng county was approved by the State Council to withdraw from the county and set up a city. Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng City is the birthplace of China Kung Fu, the ancestral home of Zen Buddhism, and is known as "the first temple in the world". Zhongyue Temple is the largest Taoist temple among the five mountains, and Songyang Academy is the place where scholars Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi gave lectures in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is one of the birthplaces of Neo-Confucianism in the Song and Ming Dynasties and one of the four major academies in ancient China.
