History of Yuanyang rice industry

Looking through the records of Yuanyang County, we can find that as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty, Yuanyang rice was already a special rice for the court and was described as "crystal clear, soft and sweet". "Yuanyang Rice" makes Yuanyang people proud, but many people will not think that Yuanyang has been widely planting rice for 34 years. I believe this fact will surprise many people. Yuanyang County, located at the top of alluvial plain in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, is a famous disaster-stricken county in history. According to historical records, from 946 A.D. to 1000 before liberation, the Yellow River overflowed and burst 57 times in Yuanyang County. Due to the repeated diversion of the Yellow River, the people of Yuanyang, who live in this land, have suffered from floods and salinity. The jingle "winter and spring are white, summer and autumn are watery, saline-alkali land is everywhere, and no grain is cultivated" is a true portrayal of Yuanyang County at that time. People in Yuanyang, suffering from the Yellow River, dream of "three reds" (sweet potato, red sorghum and red pepper) becoming "three whites" (white rice, white flour and white cotton). In the exploration of getting rid of poverty and getting rich, Yuanyang people finally found that this saline-alkali land under their feet was very suitable for growing rice, so they decided to introduce the Yellow River to grow rice. 1968, rice was successfully planted in Wuyuan town of this county, and the dream of "introducing yellow water to fragrant alkaline rice" was finally realized. After more than 30 years of exploration and development, the rice planting area in Yuanyang has now exceeded 450,000 mu, with an average yield of 500 kg per mu and an annual output of more than 250 million kg. Yuanyang has become a veritable hometown of rice in China.
