Salty rice is one of the characteristic staple foods in southern Fujian. If there is a happy event at home, a house (building a house) or other things, when a large group of people are asked to help, the host often treats them with salty rice. There are one-year-old or 16-year-old children at home. Before the banquet, they will collect (divide) salt rice from house to house in the village. Of course, the kind that can be cooked is better (meaning delicious). There are many things that can be added to rice, usually meat and dried seafood. After all the ingredients are cooked together, sprinkle with red onion oil and then dip in the special Minnan sweet and spicy sauce to eat.
The practice of salty rice varies from place to place, each with its own characteristics. Xiamen has salted rice and lard cabbage, Shandong has salted rice porridge and so on.
