History has misunderstood the Song literati. Scholars are not weak. Many scholars are pregnant with martial arts, right?
Sima Guang, a Song Dynasty poet, recorded an anecdote about the imperial examination in Sushui Story. Once there was an imperial examination, there were two people, one was Wang Sizong and the other was Zhao. They are excellent in all aspects, and their scores are neck and neck, but there is only one scholar, which makes Song Taizu don't know what to do. Therefore, Song Taizu ordered them to "just pull" to compete. Without saying a word, the two men fought in front of the Emperor Jindian. Wang Sizong successfully knocked Zhao Changyan to the ground and said to Song Taizu, "I will win!" Song Taizu laughed and announced on the spot that Wang Sizong was the top scholar. From then on, Wang Sizong won the title of "champion of hand-to-hand combat" in officialdom, because his champion was beaten back with his fist.

Two literati who have read a lot of poems and books say that they will fight. They are neither polite nor stubborn. It can be seen that the literati in the Song Dynasty were not all as weak as they thought. In fact, many literati were pregnant with martial arts.

Xin Zhongfu used to be a political consultant. He studied archery with Imperial General Guo Chongwei in the later Zhou Dynasty.

Chen Yaozi was a bachelor of Hanlin and an excellent writer in Ouyang Xiu's The Oil Man. According to records, Chen's shot can be said to have hit a hundred shots, and once an arrow shot through copper coins.

Zhang Yong, a former minister of rites, studied fencing when he was young and was good at archery. On one occasion, Zhang Yong took out a dagger from his sleeve and flew out. He can break dates in half. It seems that his flying sword skill is very good.

More than ten years ago, there was a Hong Kong film called lion roars, in which Louis Koo played Chen Jichang and Cecilia Cheung played his wife Liu Yuee. This story tells that Chen Jichang is as afraid of his wife as a tiger. Chen Jichang in history is another image. According to Su Shi's Fang Zhuan, when he was young, he admired the chivalrous man and Guo Jie of the Han Dynasty, drank good wine and swords, and spent money like water. On one occasion, Su Shi saw Chen Jichang go hunting with two followers. Chen Jichang saw a magpie flying ahead, so he told his followers to shoot an arrow quickly, but missed. So Chen Jichang tightened the reins and pranced forward, and an arrow hit the flying magpie. Whether Chen Jichang is henpecked or not is unknown, but what is certain is that he has martial arts experience, especially his shooting skills.

It can be seen that scholars in the Song Dynasty generally practiced martial arts, and their martial arts were definitely not posturing, but could come in handy. In addition, they cultivate an atmosphere of "Ren Xia" through martial arts, even at the expense of "using force to violate the ban". Zhang Yong's "Ren Xia" behavior is recorded in the note novels of the Song Dynasty.

According to Qing Suo Gao Yi, Zhang Yong lived in a hotel in tangyin county (now Henan) before winning the imperial examination. It wasn't long before he found out that this was a black shop. He decided to strike first and kill his master's family with his sword. He even cut off the head of the owner of the black shop, set fire to the black shop, and then walked away.
