The first real university in China was a foreign missionary university which was born in the 1960s of 19. Shanghai St. John's University and St. John's University are completely established according to the western university model. This university, which has always been very strong, was finally forcibly disintegrated after liberation. After 1929, St. John's alumni began to join the school board and participate in the formulation of the school's major policies and the budget and final accounts of the school's funds. The school's funding comes from self-study meals, church allowances and donations from all walks of life and alumni.

St John's University is the first school to introduce western teaching methods into China. Besides attaching great importance to English, religion, sports and extracurricular activities are also emphasized. The school sports facilities are perfect, and the first football team in China history was born here. There are many other student organizations and activities, including many very active left-wing student groups, who actively participated in political movements such as the May 4th Movement.

1925 After the May 30th tragedy, 17 faculty and 553 students left St. John's University because they were dissatisfied with the school, and founded Guanghua University in August of that year. 1937 after the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, St. John's University moved its school to Nanjing Road in the public concession and cooperated with Hujiang University, Soochow University, Zhijiang University and Jinling Women's College of Arts and Sciences? Five schools formed Shanghai Christian Union University, but later moved back to the original campus at 1940.

In addition to tuition income, the school also has donations from churches and other societies. 1950 65438+February, St. John's University officially announced its departure from the Anglican Church. 1952 was dismantled and merged into many other universities, mainly East China Normal University, Fudan University and Shanghai Second Medical College.
