Essays on Shanghai Bund Architecture (I)
I remember seeing such a sentence somewhere: architecture is solidified music, and architecture is a history book of stones. This sentence has been fully proved in Shanghai Bund, which is known as the "World Architecture Expo". Coming to Shanghai Bund, from 1 to No.33 Bund, is really like listening to a beautiful music, which is light or soothing and lingering. At the same time, every building here is a period of history, and their changes in functions and similarities and differences in architectural styles are all telling the changes of the Bund.

The current name of the Bund is Zhongshan Dongyi Road, which starts from Yan 'an East Road in the south, ends at Waibaidu Bridge in the north, and ends at Zhongshan Dongyi Road 1 to No.33 Zhongshan Dongyi Road (in fact, I don't quite understand it until now, some buildings compete for three house numbers, so 1 No.33 is not No.33 building), including classical buildings, neoclassical buildings, art deco buildings and compromises. Below, let's take a brief look at the past lives of various buildings and the style characteristics of various buildings.

The bund 1

People used to call the Bund the first building in Asia.

19 13 was invested by Macbeth company and built in 19 16, with reinforced concrete structure. It was originally rented for a long time by the British businessman Asia Oil Company, so it was called Asia Building. Starting from 1996, it will be settled by the headquarters of China Pacific Insurance Company.

The architecture is neoclassical style (or eclectic style), and the appearance is also baroque decoration. The facade consists of three horizontal parts and three vertical parts. The first and second floors of the external wall are made of granite bricks to form a base. There are doors on the east and south. There are four pillars of Onek in the east front door, two on the left and two on the right. There are Doric columns on the inner door and semicircular carved coupons on the door. There is a balcony in the middle concave part of the third to fifth floors, and there are love Onek columns on the sixth and seventh floors. The whole building is magnificent, luxurious and elegant.

Bund No.2

The former Shanghai General Association Building, built at 19 1 1, was a famous club at that time. Later, it was transformed into a seaman's club and then into Dongfeng Hotel. Now it's luxurious waldorf.

The building is neoclassical style, and the facade is composed of three sections. There are six Onek pillars running through the two floors in the middle, and the north and south ends of the fifth floor are baroque towers. What surprised me most was the complicated and exquisite floral decorations on the window lattice and wall, which were impressive.

Bund no.3

The order of the buildings is a bit special. Facing the Bund is No.3 Zhongshan Dongyi Road, and the inscription is No.4 Zhongshan Dongyi Road.

Originally a favorable building, it was used by Shanghai Civil Architecture Planning Institute, and now it is a high-grade shopping and consumption place.

The building was built from 19 16 to 19 18, which is one of the earliest steel frame structures in Shanghai.

The Bund No.3 is an eclectic architectural style. The facade is treated in three stages. The eaves, columns and coupons are also baroque decorations, and the top is a baroque tower pavilion.

Bund No.5, Bund No.5

Bund No.5, built in 192 1 to 1925, is a reinforced concrete frame structure. It turned out to be Nissin Mansion, which was once used by the Maritime Safety Administration, and now it is a high-class restaurant.

The building is a classical style, and it is a soft building that combines modern western architecture with Japanese classical architecture. The facade consists of three parts, all made of granite. The overall appearance decoration is not much, simple and dignified.

The bund no.6

Bund No.6 was built in 1897, with brick and wood structure, and it is one of the oldest existing buildings on the Bund. It was originally used by auction houses, then by China Commercial Bank and then by Changjiang Shipping Company. Now it is a high-end shopping and consumption place.

This building is a Gothic revival style with a beautiful arcade at the entrance. The windows and holes on each floor are pointed coupons, flat coupons, arc coupons and semicircular coupons from top to bottom, which look beautiful and smart as a whole.

The bund no.7

No.7 on the Bund has also changed hands many times. Originally Dabei Telegraph Company, it was later used by China Commercial Bank and Changjiang Shipping Company. Now it is the Bank of Bangkok, Thailand, Shanghai Branch. Built in 1906 to 1907, brick-concrete structure.

The building is French Renaissance style, with three vertical facades, a large number of Greek Ionian column decorations, and a pair of baroque black domes on both sides of the top, which is dignified and elegant. The most distinctive feature of Bund No.7 is a crimson Dapeng bird with human wings on the lintel, which has become a prominent symbol of Bund No.7. ..
