Ningbo Drum Tower, which stands at the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Zhenming Road, was built in the first year of Tang Changqing (82 1) and has a history of more than 1 100 years. Drum Tower is the only landmark building in Ningbo to establish and set up state-owned institutions, and it has become a symbol of the history of this port city with its unique style of combining Chinese and western. In the 13th year of Wanli reign of Ming Dynasty (1585), when Cai Guiyi, the satrap, was about to fall, he borrowed the meaning of "Only wanderers can come, often new beauties are surprised, white clouds and red clouds dawn from the sea, and spring is in the wild plum river and willow" in Du Fu's poem "Looking at Lu Cheng's trip to Jinling in early spring" in the Tang Dynasty, which means the beginning of the Bohai Sea.
The existing pavilion building in the Drum Tower was supervised and repaired by Guangqing, the inspection department, in the fifth year of Qing Xianfeng (1855). 1930 a reinforced concrete watchtower and an alarm platform were built on the tower of the Qing dynasty, and a mechanical alarm clock was installed. The lower part of the Drum Tower is a typical China traditional tower style, but the tower is built with a western-style bell tower in Roman style. The Gulou pedestrian street in the Drum Tower used to be the home of Mingzhou Zicheng. Since the first year of Tang Changqing (82 1), it has been the political center of all dynasties, that is, the seat of the official office.
There stands a quaint blue-black pagoda at No.206 Zhongshan West Road, which is the famous Tianning Temple West Tower. It is the oldest and only Tangta in Zhejiang Province, with precious historical value. This tower was originally one of the first two towers in Tianning Temple. Because the brick is engraved with the words "Xian Tong made this brick in four years (863)", it is also called Xian Tong Tower. In March of the 23rd year of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty (1684), a fire broke out in the houses around Tianning Temple, which caused great damage to the East Tower, and finally collapsed during Guangxu period of Qing Dynasty, leaving only the West Tower. After many natural and man-made disasters, the temple is no longer brilliant, only the Tianning West Tower still stands. 1995 During the reconstruction of Zhongshan Road, due to disrepair, the Tianning Tower was severely weathered, the tower gate and waist eaves were damaged, the outer wall bricks at the bottom collapsed, and the four corners of the inner wall were rammed empty. Although severely damaged, it still has the characteristics of brick towers in the Tang Dynasty. The archaeological department of Ningbo City excavated the Tianning Temple site in Tang Dynasty, restored the Tianning Temple Tower and revived it.
Yongfengku site in Yuan Dynasty is located on the east side of Drum Tower, which is a large-scale storage site of a local ancient city and is the first discovery in China. Its structure is basically intact, which provides an extremely important archaeological example for the study of storage buildings in Yuan Dynasty. In 2002, it was rated as one of the top ten new archaeological discoveries in China. In March, 20001year, a real estate development company in Ningbo planned to build on the plot of the former Municipal Public Security Bureau located at Zhongshan West Road, Ningbo. Ningbo Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted a rescue excavation, and found a relatively complete site of large government storage institutions in the Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties with Yongfeng Library on Qingyuan Road as the core, and found a large number of pottery and other relics, which gathered most famous kiln sites in the south of the Yangtze River and the Central Plains during the Song and Yuan Dynasties. Through literature research, it can be confirmed that this architectural relic is the site of Yongfengku in Yuan Dynasty, which was the storage institution of the government at that time. It is one of the most important urban archaeological discoveries in Ningbo so far, and it is of great value for studying the history of ancient architecture in China. Later, it was opened as "Yongfengku Ruins Park", and there was another historical and cultural heritage landscape on Zhongshan Road.
During 2005-2007, Ningbo implemented the reconstruction of Zhongshan Road with a loan from the World Bank. In order to protect the tower of Tianning Temple in the Tang Dynasty, roads and pipelines have given way, and historical and cultural buildings such as Fan House, Wang House and Xu House have been restored. Cultural heritage protection funds amounted to $2.3 million. Ningbo pays attention to the protection of historical and cultural heritage in urban transformation. It was regarded as a classic case in the cultural heritage protection forum jointly organized by UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture, National Cultural Heritage Administration and the World Bank, and was highly praised by all parties.
