1In July 1947, the Marshall Islands was entrusted to the United States by the United Nations, and later formed four political entities, namely Palau, Northern Mariana Islands and Micronesia (Federated States of).

Saipan is the federal capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, and 1962 became the capital of the American Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. On June 28th, 2009, the United States federal government took over the immigration affairs of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Any baby born locally can apply for an American passport and become an American citizen.
