Confucius once compiled a history book called Spring and Autumn Annals, which recorded the history of Lu at that time, and the time span recorded in this history book was roughly the same as that in the Spring and Autumn Period, so later generations called this historical stage the Spring and Autumn Period, referring to the period from 770 BC to 476 BC, which was basically the first half of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.
The original name of Zuo Zhuan was Zuo's Chunqiu, and it was renamed Chunqiu Zuozhuan in Han Dynasty. According to legend, it was written by Zuo Qiuming at the end of the Spring and Autumn Period to explain Confucius' Spring and Autumn Annals. It began in the year of Luyin (722 BC) and ended in the 14th year of Lu Daogong (453 BC). Based on the Spring and Autumn Annals, it illustrates the outline of the Spring and Autumn Annals by describing the specific historical facts of the Spring and Autumn Period, which is one of the important Confucian classics.
Together with Chunqiu Gongyang Biography and Chunqiu Guliang Biography, they are called "Chunqiu Sanzhuan". Zuo Zhuan is an independent history book in essence. The authors of Zuo Zhuan, Sima Qian and Ban Gu have all been proved to be Zuo Qiuming, which is the most credible historical data at present. Now some scholars think that it was done by people in the early years of the Warring States, but they all question it. Without historical evidence, it can only be classified as speculation.

Later generations will arrange the historical events recorded in chronological order, which is called "chronology". The original book is also called "bamboo book chronology", which is also called "Ji Zu Ji nian", "Ji Zu Wen Gu" or "Ji Zu Shu". In the second year of Jin Taikang (28 1), it is said that in the fifth year of Xianning (279) or the first year of Taikang, people in Jixian County (now southwest of Weihui City, Henan Province) were not allowed to dig local ancient tombs and found a number of ancient bamboo slips. Grave robbers "don't care, they often disperse" and burn bamboo slips to look after the treasure. Later, when the government went, it "carelessly collected books, which were scrapped and incomplete." Chronology of Bamboo Books is a relatively complete one.
