Tangut, the ancestor of Xixia, originally lived in Songpan Plateau, Sichuan, and moved to northern Shaanxi in the Tang Dynasty. Because of his achievements in quelling chaos, he was appointed as our special envoy to Zhou Xia by the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty and surrendered to the Tang Dynasty, the Five Dynasties and the Song Dynasty.

In the Song Dynasty, Song Taizong annexed Zhou Xia of our time. However, Li was unwilling to surrender and led his troops to attack everywhere. Finally recovered the land of Wuzhou. After capturing Lingzhou, he extended his influence to the Hetao area of the Yellow River and the Hexi Corridor. After Xia Jingzong succeeded to the throne, he continued to consolidate the Hexi Corridor and proclaimed himself emperor, expanding his territory to 20 states. Later, Xia and Song fought in Hengshan area and deliberately occupied Guanzhong.

After Emperor Jingzong of Xia Dynasty, Xixia and Northern Song Dynasty started a tug-of-war. The two sides occupied each other's fortress cities and villages, and extended to Hehuang and Qinghai areas. In the later period of Emperor Chongzong of Xia Dynasty, Hengshan area fell, which once triggered a crisis. After the Jin Dynasty destroyed Liao and the Northern Song Dynasty, Xixia gradually recovered its lost land and occupied the area in front of the Yellow River.

However, its power was limited by the rulers, and its territorial expansion was not great. By the time of Emperor Renzong of Xia Dynasty, there were about 22 states, which was the last stable state in Xixia territory.
