1397, Denmark, Sweden and Norway formed a Commonwealth (Kalmar Union), and Margaret I was crowned king. The three constituent countries enjoy equal status in the Federation.

1849 On June 5th, Denmark made a peaceful transition from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy.

1864, Denmark was defeated in the Prussian War and was forced to cede Schleswig-Holstein province to Prussia.

1948, Faroe Islands gained partial autonomy.
