John Dryden, 1
English poet, playwright and literary critic. He wrote for the nobility all his life, praising the king and the Restoration Dynasty, and was named "Poet Laureate".
His main works are Fashionable Wedding (1673), All for Love (1667), Alongsha and Shifoto (Poetry), On Drama Poetry, The Basis of Tragic Criticism, etc.
He is also an important critic and playwright of English classicism. He made outstanding contributions to the emergence and development of English classical drama through drama criticism and creative practice. The word metaphysical poet was first put forward by him. It enjoys a high position in the history of European criticism.
2. Thomas Warton
Thomas Warton (1728- 1790) is an English critic and poet. His unfinished History of English Poetry (3 volumes, 1774-8 1 year) is a very valuable work.
In his poems (1777), he revived the form of sonnets, which has rarely been created since16th century. 1785, Wharton won the title of Poet Laureate after William Whitehead.
He was born in Hampshire. After graduating from Oxford University, he stayed as a professor of poetry. His younger brother Joseph Wharton (1722- 1800) is a teacher and critic, who is famous for his comments on alexander pope.
3. robert southey
Robert southey (1774- 1843) is an English writer and one of the poets in lake poets. A "negative romantic" poet, who was radical and later opposed to the French Revolution, was named poet laureate by the king in 18 13.
As an early romantic, under his leadership, folk poetry revived. He tried to use irregular blank verse, and was a pioneer of 19 century and 20 century free verse movement.
4. william wordsworth
William wordsworth (1770- 1850), an English romantic poet, was once a poet laureate. His poetic theory has shaken the rule of English classical poetics and strongly promoted the innovation of English poetry and the development of Romantic movement.
He is one of the most important English poets since the Renaissance, and his poem "Simple Life and Noble Ideas" is regarded as the school motto of Cable College of Oxford University.
5. carol ann duffy
Carol ann duffy, FRSL CBE, Scottish poet and freelance writer. She won the Ordinary Soldier Medal in 1995 and the Commander Medal in 2002.
Currently, she is the creative director of the School of Writing at Manchester City University. At the same time, she is also the queen poet of the British royal family (the famous poet laureate). She took up this post on May 1 2009 for a term of 10 years. She is the first woman to hold this position and a openly recognized gay poet.
