The history of Kansai New Wai
When Hakka architecture was mentioned before, the first thing that came to mind was the earth buildings in Yongding and Nanjing, Fujian. I recently traveled to Longnan City, Jiangxi Province, only to know that there are enclosed houses everywhere.

Although the total population of Longnan is only 338,200, there are 376 enclosed houses with different styles, which are the highest in the country in terms of quantity, scale and preservation integrity. Many enclosed houses were rated as "national key cultural relics protection units" earlier. Nowadays, Gannan Hakka enclosed houses, with Longnan enclosed houses as the main body, have been listed in the world cultural heritage protection list, and Longnan City (county level) has been awarded the title of "the county with the most Hakka enclosed houses".

It has been more than 1000 years since Longnan County was established in Southern Tang Dynasty. Hakka people have created splendid culture here. In the past, due to the barrier of mountains and inconvenient transportation, unique culture and architecture were well preserved. It is very different from Hakka culture in Guangdong and Fujian, and food is the most obvious.

Kansai Village is a treasure village in Longnan, where there are many ancient enclosed houses with obvious characteristics. The most famous is Kansai Xinwei, which is the largest Hakka enclosure in southern Jiangxi and is known as the "oriental ancient Roman castle".

Xichang Wai near Kansai Xinwei was built in Ming Dynasty, and it was not built until Qing Dynasty. In order to distinguish it, the locals call it "Laowei". Many Hakka wai houses have thought about the overall layout before construction, but Xichang Wai is an exception.

The shape of Xichang enclosure belongs to the toad shape in geomantic omen, and its appearance is not the usual square, half-moon or round structure. The builder of this enclosure is the ancestor of Xu Mingjun, the founder of Kansai New Enclosure. They built the house first, then the wall, and the ancestral hall was stuck in the middle of the ancient paddock by the body. This kind of modeling is really strange for laymen.

Many tourists come and go in a hurry and don't know the history and culture of Xichang Wai carefully. We are lucky in this respect, because some sculptures in Xichang Wai were not introduced by knowledgeable people.

On the day of our visit, we met Uncle Xu, who is a descendant of the third room. He enthusiastically and seriously led us to Lijiaoyuan, pointing to sculptures and paintings everywhere, and explained the cultural origin and connotation to us.

Xichang has carvings of "fishing and ploughing" window lattice, as well as ancient murals such as dragons and phoenixes and birds flying towards the phoenix. Although the sculpture is ancient, it is still well preserved, which shows that future generations cherish what their ancestors left behind.

Hakkas were originally immigrants from the Central Plains. Although many descendants changed culture to agriculture, they still attached importance to the improvement of cultural literacy, which is one of the reasons why local talents have been coming forth in large numbers.

The new Kansai Wai next to Xichang Wai has a history of more than 200 years. From the ground, it looks like a huge castle, and from a height, it looks like a big national character.

There are pools on the front, lower left and right side of Kansai New Wai, which is particularly aura. Especially, the paddock and blue sky and white clouds are reflected in the pool, just like a beautiful picture.

Kansai New Wai is a three-story civil structure with 79 rooms on each floor, and each brick wall tells a long story. There is also a "Zhou Xiaohua" and Meihua Academy in the west gate of Xinwei. The whole enclosure is elegant and elegant, and the details are very particular. It is said that it took 29 years to build.

Whether it is Lao Wei, Xinwei or other closed houses in Kansai Village, people still live there, giving off strong fireworks, especially when villagers cook and entertain guests.

There are many festivals in the ancient village every year, which show the long Hakka culture to the fullest.

Passionate gongs and drums, dynamic dragon dances and melodious Hakka folk songs are all worth knowing, tasting and sharing.

Travel Guide: Position the destination as "Kansai Wai" in advance by car, and follow the navigation to get there. You can also take a bus to Kansai in Longnan City.
