Historical evolution of environmental protection departments in China government agencies
The government attaches great importance to environmental protection.

Starting from 1997, China municipal government held a forum during the "two sessions" for seven consecutive years to listen to the report on environmental protection work and make arrangements for environmental protection work. China's national leaders believe that environmental protection is a major event to strengthen the country, enrich the people and secure the world, and it is related to national environmental security. The essence of protecting the environment is to protect productive forces. To establish and improve the comprehensive decision-making mechanism of environment and development, local officials should personally take charge of environmental issues. We must strengthen unified environmental supervision, increase environmental investment and encourage public participation. We should put pollution prevention and ecological protection in the same important position. It is necessary to highlight key points and pay close attention to pollution prevention and control in key cities, river basins, regions and sea areas.

In the reform of state institutions, the environmental protection department has been continuously strengthened. 1988 the state environmental protection bureau is independent from the former Ministry of urban and rural construction and environmental protection, and is directly under the the State Council municipality. 1993, upgraded to the bureau directly under the deputy ministerial level. 1998, upgraded to the bureau directly under the Ministry level and renamed the State Environmental Protection Administration.
