Why can't the world's longest Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal be completely navigable?
As the oldest canal in China and even in the world, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal began in the Spring and Autumn Period. It has a history of more than 2500 years. The south starting point of the Grand Canal is Hangzhou and the end point is Beijing. It flows through five water systems. This canal was of great strategic and practical significance in ancient times. It is of great help to cultural exchange and economic development. Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and Great Wall. Karez is also known as the three major projects in ancient China.

Due to the unique geographical environment of China, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is the greatest man-made ancient canal in the world. Now it is a national key protected cultural relic. So now the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is not fully opened, not only because of cultural relics, but also for other reasons.

In fact, the reason why the canal was suspended is not very difficult. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was replaced by shipping in the Qing Dynasty. Because the cost of shipping is lower and the speed is faster than the canal. Now there are railway transportation, pipeline transportation and so on, and even some things are transported by air. Among a large number of goods, railway transportation is cheaper, more efficient and can save costs. And now many places and geographical conditions are very different from those in ancient times, just like the northern section of Jining has been unable to allow ships to pass. So there are very few boats on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal now, and only the southern inland canal is still playing a certain role, because it can be transported for the time being! Compared with the previous grand occasion, it is now very deserted, but now the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is one of the important water conveyance channels for the South-to-North Water Transfer Project in China. But compared with its shipping value, the present Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is more historic.

Now the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal with a long history is not developed, but protected. I also hope that more and more people can protect these historical relics. Let the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal give better play to its historical value.
