Information from Contemporary Navy magazine
Contemporary Navy is a military publication, sponsored by People's Navy Newspaper and headed by Political Department of China People's Liberation Army. Since 15 was founded, she has published more than 100 issues with a total circulation of millions of copies.

This magazine has been paying attention to the national maritime rights and interests, paying attention to national defense construction, publicizing the new look of the people's navy, and spared no effort to silently contribute to enhancing the concept of marine coastal defense for the whole people. In recent years, this journal won the first "National 100 Key Social Science Journals" and "China People's Liberation Army Journal Award Nomination Award" and "Double Hundred Journals" in China. Last year, the magazine was also rated as an advanced unit in a series of activities to publicize the national defense education law.

Since the establishment of 15, the contemporary navy has persisted in keeping pace with the times and achieved good social and economic benefits.

Identify powerful naval features

Contemporary Navy is a periodical focusing on ideological and political education, taking into account military, literature and history, popular science and other knowledge. After the public release of 1990, military contents (Chinese and foreign naval history, equipment, people, etc. ) gradually expanded, but some articles such as ideological criticism, culture and art, and life sentiment still occupy a considerable space and lack distinctive naval characteristics.

Faced with this situation, the magazine conducted a survey of the reader market at that time, and found that most readers who liked Contemporary Navy were martial and harbor defense. These people are not only curious about naval life, but also concerned about the strength of our navy and its position in the world, hoping to understand the current situation of navies around the world. These people also know that there is still a gap between China's navy and the world's powerful navy in terms of equipment strength, but they are more eager to know the efforts and achievements made by China's navy to win the future high-tech maritime war. To this end, the magazine decided to strengthen the "military flavor, seafood flavor and smoke flavor" of the publication, so that the magazine has strong naval characteristics.

First of all, focus on promoting the "three modernizations" of our navy. On the premise of confidentiality, according to the military strategic policy of our army in the new period, it embodies the idea of building the army by quality and strengthening the army by science and technology, and comprehensively displays the latest achievements in the revolutionary, modern and regular construction of the people's navy from the aspects of education and training, organization and command, military thinking, military concept and soldiers' quality, reflecting the preparation for military struggle of our navy and the training life and spiritual outlook of our officers and men. Here, I will focus on the modernization process of China's navy, and drum up and shout for the construction of our navy from public opinion.

Second, increase the amount of information reflecting the naval world. It comprehensively reflects the situation of navies all over the world, including the naval world, the development trend of the navy, the officers and men of the navy, and the sophisticated weapons and equipment of the navy. This paper mainly reports on the major events of navies around the world, as well as the hot spots of maritime military struggle that the world is very concerned about, such as sea area division, competition for marine resources, expansion of maritime power, maritime exercises and maritime operations.

Third, highlight the flavor of the times. When reporting on the "three modernizations" construction of our navy, we will introduce the military training, drills and life at sea of the People's Navy to readers in the shortest time. At the same time, closely follow the latest developments, hot topics, maritime wars or exercises of navies around the world. The introduction of foreign navies also focuses on its new situation and development, that is, new army building ideas, organizational system, education and training. The words "new" and "refined" are highlighted in the introduction of naval weapons and equipment. In the process of introduction, the viewpoint should be correct, the content should be informative and the report should be timely.

Fourth, both knowledge and readability are equally important. From the contemporary navy to the future navy, from the China navy to foreign navies, this paper systematically introduces the common sense things of navies in various countries, such as military language, military flags, ranks, ranks, military medals, uniforms, naming of warships, classification of various warships, and concepts of various shipborne weapons. Focus on those things that the public pays attention to, wants to know and wants to know, tell stories of deeds and experiences, and popularize the introduction of equipment, so that readers are subtly influenced by willingness and effective reading and are influenced by naval and marine cultural knowledge.

Because the contemporary navy insists on highlighting the naval characteristics in the market competition, it has achieved the unique pursuit of the whole country and the whole army in the tens of thousands of periodical markets. In recent years, domestic military periodicals have cooled down, and the circulation of some periodicals has dropped sharply. Contemporary Navy has not only gained a firm foothold, but also made a solid step to become a quality periodical and build a well-known brand of the whole army.

Create a good environment for running journals

In terms of publishing environment, Contemporary Navy is congenitally deficient: the magazine is not edited, and the publishers are transferred from various offices of the Navy newspaper, with a total of only three people, which is a serious shortage of manpower.

Faced with this innate disadvantage, the magazine did not flinch. With the support of the leaders of the navy newspaper, we will overcome all kinds of difficulties, fully mobilize everyone's enthusiasm, and do everything possible to create a good publishing environment.

First, choose people in an eclectic way. The magazine made full use of the advantages of the newspaper and hired two comrades of the newspaper as part-time editors with the consent of the leaders of the navy newspaper. The representative of a certain army in Nanjing is familiar with weapons and equipment and has a good understanding of naval issues, so he is transferred across services; When a non-commissioned officer showed his talent in publishing magazines during his study in the club, the club tried every means to keep him; The agency also re-employed the retired old president and used the rich experience of old comrades in running journals. In this way, the shortage of staff in the magazine was solved.

Second, praise in time to stabilize people's hearts. In the past, some comrades in the navy newspaper had a prejudice that the contemporary navy was only a sideline of the newspaper and had no future. Don't say meritorious service when summing up your work every year. There are few awards. In recent years, Contemporary Navy has made some achievements in establishing first-class periodicals, which has been widely recognized by naval newspapers and periodicals. At present, not only are people rewarded in the editorial department every year, but some comrades have also made third-class achievements. At the end of 1999, with the approval of the navy party Committee, the editor-in-chief of the magazine has settled the treatment of deputy division heads. This also greatly mobilized the enthusiasm of young editors.

Third, to facilitate the work. Some comrades in the editorial department live in the city and have to go back and forth for two hours every day. Considering the particularity of editing work, the magazine makes an exception and allows it to edit at home at ordinary times and come to the office two or three times a week to handle affairs or attend meetings, which not only reduces unnecessary busyness, but also improves work efficiency. Provide economic conditions for young editors' families to be employed with the army, so that they can settle down as soon as possible and work with peace of mind. The editor in charge of distribution has much contact with the outside world, so he is equipped with a telephone and a BP machine.

Because magazines attach great importance to mobilizing the enterprising spirit and sense of responsibility of magazine owners, they have created a harmonious and upward environment for running magazines. Although there are not many staff members assigned to the magazine by Navy Daily, everyone can work actively, tirelessly and creatively.

Strictly abide by the national publishing policy.

Facing the fierce competition in the periodical market in China, some periodicals overemphasize the "market" and neglect the "management", which leads to one kind or another of problems. In this regard, "Contemporary Navy" magazine has a clear understanding. Do not blindly cater to the low-level or curious reading psychology and taste of some readers, and do not unilaterally pursue market sales and single economic interests. But strictly abide by the state's publishing policies and regulations, strictly enforce the discipline of news propaganda of the central and military, and run publications from the perspective of "stressing politics" and "defending positions."

At present, the agency has three full-time editors, two part-time staff and three employees. Each manuscript not only insists on the first review of editing, the second review of editing and the final review of the president, but also invites the rehired old president to review the manuscript, adding a review barrier to ensure that the first review, review and final review of the manuscript are strictly in accordance with the propaganda caliber of the central government and the propaganda discipline of the military. In addition, the magazine insists on standardizing the operation of each technical link of manuscript arrangement. After the editor in charge proofreads for the last time, the editor-in-chief will have to read it again before going to press.

Because "Contemporary Navy" can't attract high-quality manuscripts by charging high fees like local publications with large circulation, it is very hard to find good manuscripts and excellent manuscripts. Under such circumstances, magazines naturally know the importance of spontaneous good manuscripts to improve their circulation, but they will not misuse them. All articles and pictures involving major themes have to go through the examination and approval process. Articles and pictures that are too late to be approved due to time constraints will never be published without authorization. For example, the magazine once received a memoir written by an old comrade who retired from the navy, which reflected the incident that the Chinese People's Navy secretly sent troops to mine in Yuanshan Port of North Korea during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. The incident has never been made public, and there will definitely be a reader market. But it was not published before it was reported to the Naval Security Committee for approval. There is also a vivid article that witnessed Lin Biao fleeing from Shanhaiguan Airport. The local newspaper has been serialized. After editing the manuscript, the editor thought twice and deleted it.

The editors of "Contemporary Navy" are all transferred from various offices of the Navy newspaper, and there is no full-time proofreading. In this case, the magazine specially hired two professional proofreaders familiar with naval knowledge to proofread each manuscript, and proofread each manuscript no less than three times. Articles involving major topics should be revised accordingly. After the production of each magazine film is completed in the printing plant, a special person should be appointed to read through the blueprint. Once quality problems are found, they should be reworked in the printing plant immediately.

In recent years, magazines have achieved no major problems and obvious technical mistakes in implementing publishing policies and regulations, and they have truly achieved "responsibility for defending the soil" in the process of running journals.

Never stop the pace of innovation

"It is easy to conquer the world, but difficult to defend it." This is especially true in the periodical world. In the running practice of 15 "Contemporary Navy" magazine, I always maintained a deep sense of urgency: sailing against the current, if you don't advance, you will retreat. In order to make the magazine keep pace with the times, they have never stopped the pace of innovation and have been surpassing and breaking through themselves.

First, do not eat "imperial grain" to enter the market. After the publication of Contemporary Navy, like many periodicals in the military, it was supported by a certain amount of funds allocated by the superiors and distributed to the grassroots officers and men of the naval forces on a regular basis. At that time, the price of magazines was low and the printing cost was high. Each magazine needs 0.70 yuan, and the annual marine affairs subsidy is nearly 60 thousand yuan.

"Imperial food" is delicious, but it tastes tasteless when chewed. At the end of 1994, after analyzing the situation of running a magazine, the leaders of navy newspaper clearly pointed out that magazines should find the right market, ask for benefits from the market, and embark on a road of self-survival. At the beginning of 1995, after the requirement of "taking the road of self-survival" of Contemporary Navy was approved and supported by the person in charge of the Maritime Safety Administration, the magazine boldly borrowed from the practices of some local and military journals, and adopted a multi-pronged approach to broaden the distribution channels, which achieved results that year. The print run of each issue has reached more than 30,000 copies, which has truly entered a virtuous circle of "self-financing and self-survival".

Second, change the titles of periodicals to meet the needs of readers. Contemporary Navy always regards readers as gods and regards readers' needs as the first signal to improve its publishing work. At the beginning, the original name of "contemporary navy" was "sailor". Although this title has its own characteristics, it is still difficult to cover and convey the positioning and content of publications needed by the market. At that time, many "navy fans" who loved the army wrote to reflect that they mistakenly thought it was a literary magazine without looking at the text carefully (at that time, literary journals had entered a trough). For this reason, the editorial department decided to give up the title "Sailor", which is quite popular among some readers. After many discussions, it was finally determined by the head of the navy as a military publication with distinctive naval characteristics and a sense of the times, that is, Contemporary Navy. Once the title of the new book was used, it was quickly recognized by readers, and the circulation suddenly tripled or quadrupled.

Third, make the publication more "weighty". The fierce competition in the military periodical market has never stopped. In this regard, the contemporary navy strives for development in the competition, relies on high-quality products to gain a foothold in the market, and decides on the next step in due course. At the beginning of the publication of 1996, in order to make up for the weakness of bimonthly news and readers' thirst quenching, the magazine was revised and added pages at the right time, that is, from 48 pages on the cover of 4 colors to 64 pages on the cover of 8 colors. At the same time, the magazine also put forward the goal of "fresher seafood, stronger military flavor, newer style and higher taste", that is, each issue has a group of key manuscripts to show the justice and masculinity of our navy officers and soldiers, publicize our navy's unremitting efforts to safeguard maritime rights and interests, and thus show the taste and authority of naval publications in similar journals. Later, the magazine contacted several photo agencies (networks) to make the color pages of the publication news and timely.

Fourth, let readers see the publication as soon as possible. Two years ago, many readers wrote to the magazine to reflect that they were glad that Contemporary Navy opened a window for them to learn about China and the world navy, but the biggest regret was that they could not see her every month. Considering the readers' desire for magazines, in order to win more readers, many quarterly and monthly magazines in the periodical market at that time changed their publications to fortnightly or weekly, but few were bimonthly. The magazine resolutely asked the superior to change the publication from bimonthly to monthly, and finally, with the approval of the General Political Department, it was changed to monthly in the second half of 2000. This shortened the publishing cycle, accelerated the dissemination of information, and further expanded its influence inside and outside the military.

Fifth, make the publication binding more exquisite. With the continuous improvement of readers' aesthetic level, the binding design of publications is becoming more and more critical. Whether a publication is exquisite, whether readers can recognize it among many publications, and whether they can achieve "five or three", that is, staying for three seconds outside the five steps, has become an important aspect to measure the quality of publications. For this reason, Contemporary Navy has made great efforts in the binding design of publications, and gradually formed its own binding style, which is dynamic, aesthetic, seafood and military, making the magazine cover have a strong visual impact.

Innovation has brought new vitality and new atmosphere to the journal. In recent years, the magazine has won many awards in the whole country and the whole army.

Good social benefits have been achieved.

Over the years, the contemporary navy insists on putting social benefits first, sometimes sacrificing economic benefits to protect social benefits, so it has made great achievements in social benefits.

First, put the blue land into the hearts of China people. The Contemporary Navy published Why the San Zi Jing Forgot the Ocean and China people, do you still remember the Sino-Japanese War? And "Looking for Answers in Liu Gongdao", etc., to explore the maritime rights and interests, focusing on the close relationship between the development of the Chinese nation and the ocean. From the dispute and development of the Tumen River estuary to the establishment of the sovereign monument of Zengmu shoal in the South China Sea: from the Gulf War to the ownership of Diaoyu Island; From the feat of Zheng He's voyage to the lament of "banning the sea" in Qing Dynasty, people are paying close attention to that blue land.

Secondly, the tall image of the officers and men of the People's Navy is printed in the minds of China people. After reading the deeds of the people's navy's hard training and achievements in coastal areas vigorously promoted by the contemporary navy, all walks of life have expressed their reverence. Fu Yu, a middle school student in Taihe County, Anhui Province, read the touching stories of Nansha officers and soldiers in Contemporary Navy magazine and made a wish: he would not seek fame and fortune in this life, but would die in Nansha and save a complete country with blood and life. Shen Minjun, an employee of Dingzhai Credit Union in Shangyu City, Zhejiang Province, read an article in this magazine describing the training life of my marine and suddenly fell in love with my marine. Once the story of flight captain Bai was disclosed in the magazine, it attracted countless middle school students who were interested in coastal defense to write to the editorial department, hoping to be admitted to the naval academy so as to patrol the coastal defense line of the motherland in the future.

Third, encourage aspiring young people to join in coastal defense. Many college and middle school students have learned about the People's Navy through Contemporary Navy, and are determined to be a naval soldier and defend Wan Li's coastal areas. Hu Dongfeng, a boy from Shaoxing 16, Zhejiang Province, yearned to become a navy after reading Contemporary Navy. He couldn't wait to grow up 18, so he secretly ran away from home and went to Beijing to join the army. Wang Jun of No.1 Middle School in Xiantao City, Hubei Province, and other students got to know the contemporary navy, and jointly wrote a proposal of thousands of words to Zhang Lianzhong, the former naval commander, and collected hundreds of signatures. And he signed it with blood, expressing his firm belief in building a strong navy and his strong pursuit of becoming a navy.
