Heroes in ancient and modern times are only kings. Who comments on Jiang Wei?
It comes from Zhuge Liang's "To Young Qi Boyue", which was written by Luo Guanzhong in the Ming Dynasty, and Zhuge Liang's evaluation of Jiang Wei, a general of Shu and Han Dynasties.

Original text:

Wen can raise a pen to secure the world and mount an Kun.

Whoever has a strategy wins, and the heroes of ancient and modern times are only kings.

Translation:

In literature, lifting a pen can pacify the world. In terms of martial arts, you only need to get on the horse to reverse Gan Kun. There are thousands of tricks in your heart, and no one can overcome them. Only you can be called a hero through the ages.

It is said that Jiang Wei is a rare hero who can be a prime minister to govern government affairs, but also a general to lead troops to fight, and he is both civil and military, and his strategy is unparalleled.

Extended data

Jiang Wei was a famous Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. When I was a teenager, I lived with my mother and liked the theory of Zheng Xuan, a Confucian master. Because his father Jiang Tong died in battle, Jiang Wei was appointed as a corps commander by the county.

In the sixth year of Jianxing (AD 228), Zhuge Liang led an army out of Qishan to attack Wei. At this point, Jiang Wei and others are accompanying Ma Zun, the prefect of Tianshui County, on patrol. Ma Zun suspected that Jiang Wei and others would rebel and fled to Shangguan (now Tianshui City, Gansu Province) overnight, and closed the city gate to prevent Jiang Wei and others from entering the city.

Jiang Wei then returned to his hometown of Jixian, and Jixian refused to let him enter the city. Jiang Wei had no choice but to go to Zhuge Liang. That year, Jiang Wei was twenty-seven years old.

Zhuge Liang was very happy that Jiang Wei went to West Shu. He took Jiang Wei's hand and said that he was looking for talents everywhere and wanted to teach him his life's hard work, but no such person appeared. Now I finally met him and got what I wanted. Thus established the mentoring relationship between Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei.

Historically, Zhuge Liang also spoke highly of Jiang Wei in his letters to colleagues Zhang Yi and Jiang Wan. He wrote in the letter that Jiang Wei was loyal to his duties, diligent in commanding and thoughtful, which was beyond Shao Li and Ma Liang's reach. Jiang Wei can be regarded as an outstanding talent in Liangzhou area.

Later, Zhuge Liang wrote in his letter that Jiang Wei was very wise in the military, not only brave and fearless, but also well versed in the use of troops. This man is loyal to the Han Dynasty, and he can surpass others. When he has mastered all-round military skills, let him enter the palace to see the emperor.

After Zhuge Liang's death, Fei Yi, who was in charge of military and political power, advocated the town state and opposed the premature pacification of the Central Plains by military means. So every time Jiang Wei wants to attack, Fei Yi often restricts him, giving him only 10,000 troops (Fei Yi often refuses, but his troops are only 10,000).

After Fei Yi's death, Jiang Wei gradually mastered the military and political power. Later, in order to implement Zhuge Liang's strategic policy, he actively pacified the domestic rebellion and strengthened the blow to Wei. During the twenty years from 238 to 262, Jiang Wei made no fewer than nine northern expeditions and won many victories.

However, the destiny cannot be violated, and Jiang Wei "can't hold the Han state with one hand." Just as he led the army to confront the Wei army in Jiange, Wei led Wargo's army to sneak into the level tone, crossed the desolate and dangerous area, and raided Chengdu, forcing the late to surrender. When the news came, Jiang Wei and his soldiers were indignant and drew their swords and cut stones to vent their anger.

After Jiang Wei's demotion to Wei, he turned against Zhong Hui, the general of Wei State, in order to repeat the mistakes of Han Dynasty in the last fight. Unfortunately, the news broke that Jiang Wei finally committed suicide.
